THE TASTERS

THE TASTERS

The tasters Le assaggiatrici is the film directed by Silvio Soldini released in cinemas last week.

I went to the cinema with Monica and this is one of the times I see the film before reading the book.

Cristina Comencini and Ilaria Macchia, who I am always curious to discover, among others, collaborated on the screenplay.

The tasters Le assaggiatrici is based on the novel written by Rosella Pastorino, inspired by the story of Margot Wölk who only at the age of 95 revealed that she was the only survivor of a group of women selected to check that their food was not poisoned.

Tony’s blog published a list of ten distressing films, there and then I had no idea, but now I can definitely mention The tasters: an hour and I don’t know how many minutes of distress.

To emphasise even more the sense of ineluctability, at times the images are interspersed with cuts in black.

The soundtrack music looms just as effectively.

The director chose to work with German actors, precisely in order to remain as faithful as possible to every single detail.

But what emerges is that people, of whatever nationality, of whatever colour, of whatever origin, suffer during the war.

I know I have written a platitude, yet it seems that everything that happened in the Second World War, as well as in all the other wars in the history of mankind, has served no purpose.

We have learnt nothing.

And we feed on the venom of the powerful.

I WANNA TAKE HUGH THERE

I WANNA TAKE HUGH THERE

I wanna take Hugh there … pun inspired by the very famous lyrics of a song that needs no introduction:

When you call my name, it’s like a little prayer
I’m down on my knees, I wanna take you there

Impossibile to listen to this song without singing it, a universal song.

Just as Hugh is universally known.

Also this time I would like to talk about the non-original soundtrack.

Here it is.

I wanna take Hugh there.

What can I say?
A fantastic excursus into pop history.

I mention as an example You’re the One That I Want, itself the soundtrack to a film I have seen countless times in my life.

Grease was the first film with friends in the cinema in the place where I was born, obviously love at first sight.

A movie in which cars take on the role of status symbols for the guys, who process them, use them for drive-ins and also for their ‘dates.’

Lo and behold, even the Deadpool & Wolverine scene with the Grease song playing in the background takes place in a car … still a symbol if you will, but a lame one.

And ‘the encounter’ is still physical and related to friendship, but on the level that characterises the whole film: totally insane.

Friendship and madness mingle as elective affinities between this trio who manage to put together a series of crowd-pleasing situations, not to mention cameos.

The third element is Shawn Levy, who gave us that gem Stranger Things

Watch out for those other two: Hugh and Ryan interact like two opposite, colourful halves, just like in this little gadget.

I wanna take Hugh there.

They represent well the passing of time, with the desire to always remain themselves, superheroes or nerds, or both.

And at the first notes of Good Riddance you are left with nostalgia: something umpredictable but it in the end is right.

Would you like to tell me something related to any of the other songs?

You can find them directly on Spotify

In both cases the songs appear as per the tracklist on the Disney site which sells the two branded LPs.

There is actually more.

Impossible not to mention Hells Bells … I’ll let you imagine as soon as the first notes start.

And then there’s I wanna take Hugh there
courtesy of Madonna.

It’s not like it’s a no-brainer.

Ryan Reynolds said in an interview that he didn’t know how to ask for it: ‘what do I do, call up and say hello this is Ryan?’

Apparently that’s exactly what happened, but luckily for him, Madonna’s kids like Marvel superheroes too.

I wanna take Hugh there.

How about you?

THERE IS STILL TOMORROW.

THERE IS STILL TOMORROW.

There is still tomorrow which sees the directorial debut of Paola Cortellesi is the film that won the Audience Award, Special Jury Prize and Mention as Best First Work at the Rome Film Festival

Paola Cortellesi doesn’t need to be introduced, I always remember one of her gags in which she ironically listed all the things she has done, which are really so many and very different from each other, but which have the same feature in common: they are all done well.

I thank Elisa and her proposal: we went to the movies together fearing that we would have to use tissues to wipe tears and instead we mostly surprised ourselves.

The Friends.
In the movie: Delia and Marisa.

Emotion, however, was not lacking.

I, for one, was moved by the portrayal of a mother’s love for her daughter, who is played by Romana Maggiora Vergano in the film.

A love above all things, a love for which nothing is impossible, a pure and unwavering love.

Fragility and strength in a maelstrom of endurance and determination in which the ability to carry the crushing weight of a long interminable series of verbal and physical injustices and bullying, is catalyzed in the resolute will to seek a better destiny for Marcella.

Mother and daughter.

A crushed mother and a model daughter who does not understand Delia’s submission.

Succumbing and resisting at the same time, in a dance that is broken melody, is rock, is hip hop rap, is retro.

Marcella does not understand, but she will.

Marcella will look at her mother Delia and see the affirmation of a seemingly simple but extremely important gesture as a right, as a beginning.

Every change has a beginning.

There is still tomorrow represents “the music that changes” in a literal sense: I cannot fail to mention the repertoire songs from the soundtrack:
Aprite le finestre Fiorella Bini
Nessuno Naked Music
Perdoniamoci Achille Togliani
A bocca chiusa Daniele Silvestri
M’innamoro davvero Fabio Concato
La notte dei miracoli Lucio Dalla
Calvin The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
B.O.B. – Bombs Over Baghdad Outkast
The little things Big Gigantic featuring Angela McCluskey
Swinging on the right side Lorenzo Maffia and Alessandro La Corte
Tu sei il mio grande amor Lorenzo Maffia, Alessandro La Corte and Enrico Rispoli.

Surprising, isn’t it?

Surprising as what you don’t expect from There is still tomorrow: the ending.

Indeed, in my heart I hoped that Delia’s project would not be the obvious one, but at the same time I would not have guessed an epilogue like the one with which Paola Cortellesi invites everyone to a beautiful reflection.

Light yet explosive, simple yet disruptive, just like Delia, just like Paola.

Yes because Delia is Paola, she is Marcella, and she is our grandmother.

Delia is so many lives of giving up, Delia is so many years of suffering.

Like nothing at all.

1899

1899

1899 is an eight-episode series, or rather, it is “a short journey” as described in the bio, created by Jantje Friese & Baran bo Odar for Netflix.

Short journey because, as communicated by the authors themselves, the series stops at the end of the first season, although two more were planned, as for Dark

Dark is referred to because the authors of 1899 are: Jantje Friese & Baran bo Odar, whose profiles by the way are currently non-existent …

On my opionion this series is definitely ICONIC at first because of this book:

May your coffee kick in before reality does.

Perfect.

AlsoI had one of those musically satisfying moments at the end of the first episode.

A surprise that was repeated in the concept, with different expressions though for each episode.

If you have already seen the series, we can talk about it in the comments: did you recognize each time?

The theme song then is a cover in the fitting interpretation of Eliot Sumner … last name that will surely ring a bell, right?

Also ça va sans dire: again the quotes and references chase each other, so much so that I encountered one of the themes I am particularly fond of,  in addition to the clues related to computer binary codes.

One of these coincides with a scene that I loved: cups raised in unison!!

Did you notice the glitch at this juncture?

So three things I am partial to, yet amazingly there is another one!

Triangles … that’s all I’ll add.

STAR WARS DAY

STAR WARS DAY

Star Wars day or May the fourth iconic data that represents the mythical motto May the Force be with You.

The Star Wars day 2022 in Vigevano took place not on the 4th but on the 7th of May: that is the first Saturday next, and the force was in all those who love the Star Wars saga.

At the event organized by Diapason for Medium Size in collaboration with Bottega dei suoni more than force I felt happiness flow through me when I saw these children

Isn’t it wonderful to see them play so free in a meadow

Of course I also congratulate a lot with all the extras of the international costuming groups officially recognized by LucasFilm: 501st Italica Garrison representatives of the empire and the Sith, Rebel Legion Italian Base  representatives of the Rebellion and the Jedi, Ori’Cetar Clan representatives of the Mandalorians, Saber Guild Trento duelists with lightsaber together with  the section dedicated to children under 18 Galactic Academy Varykbellino.

Unlike some very characterized genres, which often either love or hate each other, I believe that Star Wars is universally known and even appreciated, albeit to different levels.

As usual, by now you know me, even in Star Wars I arrived later, with one of my usual trains late …

I remember very well the amazement of Massimo, who was not yet my husband at the time, choosing a film to watch together: “You’ve never seen Star Wars ?!”

At the time there were only the first three movies, released in May in the years 1977, 1980 and 1983, which then in reality became the fourth, fifth and sixth, that is the Sequel Trilogy, after that starting from 1999 George Lucas returned to give other “episodes” that made up the Prequel Trilogy.

Obviously it was love at first sight, or perhaps I should say a lightsaber stroke: a lot to learn I still had

And you?

Needless to say, the soundtrack immediately impressed itself indelibly in my mind. Standing ovation for John Williams

Speaking of impressions… what do you think of these cappuccinos

The dark side of coffee …

Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger to hate; hate leads to suffering ...

In the comments the picture of a native character particularly radicalized in fear: Darth Anxiety 🙂
